June Online Newsletter

Greetings friends!

June is National Rose Month, so this month’s article gives you a little “insider” information about fresh cut roses and hybrid tea rose plants.  But first ... did you know?

Sixty years ago, in 1948, McShan Florist opened its doors for business. Founder Lee A. McShan Jr. said:  “I believe that every order for flowers is a special event -- for the giver, our store, and for the recipient.”  McShan also insisted that each and every order would have a beautiful presentation.

“That’s why for all these years, one single flower, a half dozen roses or 24, always leaves our store in a vase or a box with a hand-tied bow,” says President Bruce A. McShan, “never paper or just tissue.”

There are actually over 150 varieties of roses found throughout the world, but few are grown for commercial use.  Retail growers are responsible for cultivating roses with the long, sturdy stems and color variations that continue to add to the flowers’ extensive appeal.

CARE/FRESH CUT:  Every incoming shipment of roses into McShan Florist is individually trimmed under water with a sharp blade at a 45-degree angle then placed in treated water.  This promotes immediate, healthy absorption of water and nutrients to ensure the best life possible for your rose.   We encourage you to do the same if you purchase fresh-boxed roses from our store or any other retailer.  Never break or use scissors to cut the rose ... the stem is easily damaged which will affect its life.  Always use a sharp knife for cutting.

Your fresh rose arrangement from McShan Florist has received all of the proper preliminary care.  Once received, add water, and place in a cool location away from direct sunlight and drafts.

CARE/ROSE PLANTS:  We use a variety of hybrid tea rose plants in multi-plant garden baskets at McShan Florist.  Water with a common fertilizer when the soil in your individually planted rose is dry to touch.  If you choose, these roses can be transplanted into your outdoor garden or pot and should thrive in full sun.  Cut back any dead growth and fertilize lightly.
